A yet-to-be-identified passenger on Thursday died in a crash at the Awkuzu Junction, along the Onitsha-Awka Expressway area of Anambra State.
The PUNCH gathered that the accident involved a commercial truck with code number 371 belonging to the BAU Cement and a motorcyclist, Nnamdi Dieli.
No fewer than four persons were involved in the crash that claimed the life of the passenger and injured one other person.
Two other persons were said to have been rescued unhurt.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the motorcyclist conveying the passenger who was carrying the Izaga masquerade attempted to overtake the truck.
“The Izaga masquerade that the passenger was carrying was very long and it hit the truck and made the passenger fall from the motorcycle and got hit by the back tyre of the moving truck,” the eyewitnesses said.
The Acting Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the crash.
She said the FRSC rescue team rushed the victim to the Chira Hospital, Akwuzu, and also ensured the obstruction caused by the crash was cleared.
“One male adult was confirmed dead and his corpse was deposited in a mortuary. The team also ensured obstruction caused by the crash was cleared. As of the time of this report, the truck driver has been handed over to the Oyi Police Division.
“The Sector Commander, FRSC, Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, sympathised with the family of the dead victim and wished the injured victim a quick recovery.
“He warned motorists to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations emphasising that traffic rules made was to avert this kind of crash that occurred,” Onabe added.
