Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano, on Monday, commissioned a new Haematological Disease Ward with a signal that it would begin bone marrow transplant.

The AKTH will be the second Nigerian Teaching Hospital to perform the transplant in the country.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Abba Sheshe, disclosed this on Monday at the official commissioning of the ward, donated by one Engr. Umar Ibrahim.

The CMD explained that only Lagos State University Teaching Hospital had successfully performed bone marrow transplants in Nigeria.

He, however, stressed that with the establishment, furnishing, and equipping of the new Ward, the hospital could successfully admit bone marrow transplant patients.

He commended the donor Ibrahim and prayed to God to reward him abundantly.

Speaking on behalf of the donor, Prof. Mahmoud Daneji said the gesture was to immortalise his mother, as the roles of mothers could not be over-emphasised.

He appealed to beneficiaries of the services rendered in the ward, to pray for his deceased mother, the donor, and all members of her family.

Also commenting, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Auwalu Gajida, acknowledged the contribution of the donor, in promoting health care services at the hospital.

Gajida further recognised the contribution of other philanthropists in Kano, such as Alhaji Aminu Dantata, Alhaji Abdussamad Rabi’u, and Alhaji Garba Karfe in supporting the hospital.

He also recognised and commended the family of late Magaji Dambatta, as well as the Chairman and the Chief Executive of Aliko Oil and Gas.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the new ward is named Aishatu Heamatology Ward.

The facility would be utilised to begin bone marrow transplants, thus making the hospital second to conduct such operation after Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
